Happiness isn’t about achieving one final goal. It’s about finding meaning and fulfillment in the journey itself. The HAPPY Work Life MAP framework encourages measurable action steps toward your end goals through intentional action.

As we recognize the International Day of Happiness on 20 March, Stephen Shortt, EO Ireland, a career and talent strategist, shares his HAPPY Work Life MAP to help you live a happier, more fulfilling and rewarding life.
In a world where entrepreneurship is often associated with stress, long hours, and relentless hustle, it can be easy to forget why you started this journey in the first place: To create something meaningful and to find happiness along the way.
My mission in life is to make the world a better place, with happy people in fulfilling, rewarding careers. My businesses focus on the career side of that mission, but as I faced personal and professional challenges in recent years, I began to focus more on the “happy people” side of my mission and figure out how to align my personal and professional goals.
Most of us spend a large portion of our lives working or thinking about work—especially entrepreneurs. While your career shouldn’t define you, it has such an enormous impact on overall happiness that I wanted to help balance that in a holistic way.
That led me to research what truly makes people happy, and that’s how I developed the HAPPY Work Life MAP framework to align work and personal lives to achieve true fulfillment.
Happiness Is in the Journey, Not Just the Destination
As entrepreneurs, we often get caught up in the idea that happiness will come once we achieve a specific milestone or goal— whether it’s hitting revenue targets or buying a second home. But these are “means goals”—steps we think will lead to happiness. True fulfillment comes from working toward “end goals”—deeper aspirations that truly resonate with us.
Consider the goal of buying a second home: The end goal might be creating a peaceful retreat to reconnect with loved ones. When we focus too much on means goals, we might achieve them but still feel unfulfilled because we haven’t addressed the real desire behind them.
The HAPPY Work Life MAP helps entrepreneurs focus on meaningful end goals, ensuring that the journey toward them is filled with purpose and joy.
The HAPPY Work Life MAP: A Blueprint for Entrepreneurial Happiness
True happiness comes from aligning your life with your end goals. The HAPPY Work Life MAP framework encourages measurable action steps toward your end goals through intentional action. Here’s how it works:
H – Highlights
Focus on creating the moments that matter to you. Beyond business milestones, think deeply about the personal achievements that truly matter and define your life, like starting a new venture, launching a community project, or raising a family. The key is to define success on your terms.
A – Appreciation
It isn’t just about celebrating successes and the people who helped you along the way. Gratitude is also about recognizing challenges you’ve overcome. Setbacks, failures, and obstacles test resilience and shape you, contributing to personal and professional growth. By appreciating both achievements and challenges, you will stay grounded and motivated.
P – Progress
The small, consistent steps you take each day lead to significant change over time. Happiness stems from progress toward larger goals. Celebrate every incremental win, from growing your customer base to ideating a new product. Focusing on progress over perfection can transform how you approach work and reduce overwhelm. What habits or skills can you improve to further your progress?
P – People
Success and happiness are rarely achieved in a vacuum. Surrounding yourself with the right people—whether family, team members, or mentors—is fundamental to happiness and wellbeing. The traits you admire in others often reflect qualities you aspire to develop. By fostering these traits and relationships, you enrich your life and strengthen your ability to inspire and uplift others.
Y – Your Contribution
As entrepreneurs, we have the unique opportunity to create something meaningful beyond profit. We can solve real problems, build businesses that support communities, or create jobs that provide stability and purpose. Making a difference gives true purpose to your journey.
The power of entrepreneurship lies in its potential to align your work with your values. When you do, it becomes more than just a means to an end—it becomes a way to make a meaningful impact.
This is the essence of the framework—building a life and business driven by purpose and impact. When your work reflects your core values, not only do you feel more fulfilled, but you also create something lasting and impactful, making your entrepreneurial journey not just successful but meaningful.
The Power of Progress and Purpose

To me, happiness is simply progress toward purpose. That purpose is different for everyone. When you gain a deeper understanding of what it means for you, you can put the things in place to make progress toward it.
For entrepreneurs, that purpose is often larger than ourselves, and comes with a drive to make big things happen. The HAPPY Work Life MAP framework encourages entrepreneurs to reflect on what truly matters and design a life and business aligned with their values.
It’s not about achieving one big goal and then moving to the next. It’s about finding joy and meaning in everyday progress, in the relationships we build, and in the contributions we make.
If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, take a step back. Reflect on what truly matters, break goals into actionable steps, and surround yourself with supportive people.
That is the key to entrepreneurial happiness—and happy entrepreneurs progressing toward their purpose make our world a better place.
