A Day in the Life of an Entrepreneur
October 22, 2015
Laura Webb, President of Webb Insurance Company and EO Tampa Bay member, has a schedule similar to those of most successful entrepreneurs: packed. We asked Laura to share what her most productive day looks like, from getting up before 5 a.m. to exercise to finishing the day with cocktails at a networking event, and how she manages to make everything run smoothly in-between:
4:45 a.m. I try to begin the day early with exercise because frankly, if I don’t force myself to do this right away, it’s not going to happen. As a cancer survivor and a triathlon athlete, I value giving myself that time to stay healthy and continuing training for my next race. I just finished my third triathlon, and I’m already preparing for the next!
8:oo a.m. I have an in-home office, in addition to our main office, so sometimes I’ll work from home in the morning. But often, I’ll go to support my team and hold meetings at our primary location. I like to come unannounced – it gives me the freedom to adjust my schedule, as needed, and has the added benefit of keeping my team on their toes!
8:30 a.m. On Monday mornings, in particular, I like to meet with all my staff to prepare ourselves for the week, answering any questions and troubleshooting issues we may be facing in the near-future. On Mondays, I’ll never have an appointment before 10 a.m. – there’s too many emails to sort through, and I want to be as prepared as possible.
10:00 – 11:59 a.m. I’ll meet with clients and work on big projects, since my energy is high. If I can knock out a few things before lunch, the rest of the day will be much easier!
12:00 p.m. Unlike the rest of my schedule, which is constantly inconsistent, I always eat at noon. I think it’s important to completely stop and give myself some time to relax and process what’s coming next.
1:30 p.m. In order to fit in as many clients as possible, I’ll have estimated the amount of time each meeting should take and schedule my afternoons accordingly. Sometimes I may only meet with a few people in the afternoon, but I’ll have scheduled myself to capacity.
5:00 p.m. Happy hour has started, but my work-day isn’t finished. More often than not, I’ll network for at least two hours at multiple events. I’ve even been known to attend 3-4 different events in one afternoon!
7:30 p.m. Work winds down, and I get to relax and prepare for the next day. The caveat of scheduling ahead is that things change constantly – and every entrepreneur experiences this. So, I just take things one day at a time, and so far, it’s worked well!
Thanks, Laura, for letting us look at a day in the life of an entrepreneur. If you’d like to tell us how you keep yourself working as productively as possible, send us an email, and you could be featured on Octane blog!
